Orthodontic

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry which is broadly concerned with the correction of abnormalities and irregularities of teeth and jaws. These abnormalities, or malocclusion is caused by hereditary or any other external factors like accidents. Bad oral habits like thumb sucking, lip biting and breathing from the mouth can also cause malocclusion, thus adversely affecting the normal development of the teeth.

Orthodontic treatments are the dental procedures which help to move poorly aligned teeth to normal position, thus helping you against some serious problems like improper bite, difficulty in speaking and chewing, jaw problems etc.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatments

  • Boost confidence

  • Well-aligned teeth are easier to clean

  • Well-positioned teeth are less prone to germ attack and related gum diseases

  • Better chewing function

  • Better facial contour

  • Improve appearance

Types of Orthodontic Appliances

There are various types of appliances which help to get your teeth back to normal position. The severity of the malocclusion decides the types of appliance that you should wear. The main types of orthodontic appliances are:

  1. Fixed orthodontic appliances

  2. Removable orthodontics appliances

Fixed Orthodontic Appliances

These appliances are fixed with the teeth and cannot be removed by the patient himself. Fixed appliances include:

  • Traditional metal braces: metal braces are the most commonly used orthodontic alliances. They are made up of high quality stainless steel brackets which are cemented to the front surfaces of the teeth. These gently guide the teeth to its proper place.

  • Ceramic braces: these are similar to the traditional metal braces, except that the brackets match the color of the teeth. It is usually prefered over metal braces because no one can know that you are wearing them, unless closely noticed.

  • Lingual braces: these are fully invisible metal braces that are placed on the inner side of the teeth. If don’t want your braces to be visible at all, lingual braces might be the best option for you.

Regularly Visit your Dentist

A patient has to go for regular dental visits to make sure that the braces are working properly. The dentist usually gives an appointment of six to eight weeks which should be strictly followed or the braces will take more time. If your braces are damaged or broken, visit your dental clinic as soon a possible, as this may again extend the total time of the treatment

Total Time Duration

The duration of this treatment depends upon the severity of the problem, but usually it takes 1.5 to 3 years to correct the position of the teeth.

Our expert dental team at Nagem Dental Center will give you quality advice about your braces. Ignoring the dentist’s advice may elongate your treatment time or make it unsuccessful.

Removable Orthodontic Appliances

As the name suggests, these appliances can be removed by the patient himself. There are many appliances which can be used, but we at nagem dental clinic use the best one: Invisalign. Invisalign uses the best approach in order to properly position your teeth. These are a series of aligners which are created for a perfect smile. These aligner trays are made up of clear plastic which is very comfortable to wear. These trays gradually shift your teeth in place without someone realising that you are getting your teeth straight.

Before you get teeth aligners note that these are used for the patients who have mild or moderately crowded teeth. But the patients who have overcrowding or large spaces between teeth, they might need a more complex treatment.

Process of Getting Your Aligners

  • The first step is for the dentist to evaluate if clear aligners are right for you. If yes, the dentist takes the X-ray and impressions of your teeth and then sends them to a specialized lab where the tray is custom made for your teeth

  • When you receive the trays, you need to wear the first one for two weeks. Then it is time to move to the next tray to accomplish the next gradual movement until the desired result is obtained

  • Your aligners will be altered from time to time depending upon how the movement of your teeth vary.

Time Period

Aligners are to be worn for at least 20 hours a day if you want the best results. And the total time aligners take to completely get your teeth right is between 6 months to 2 years.

Benefits of Wearing Teeth Aligners

  • The best thing about aligners is that no one can see you are wearing them

  • They are easy to remove so you can have your meals, brush and floss, and put them back. This is totally opposite to traditional braces which can’t be removed, hence making teeth prone to cavities and other tooth decay

  • They are easy to clean

  • These are comparatively soft, so they do not hurt your cheeks or gums
